The curriculum

At IPS Hilversum we implement and follow the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP). This framework for education is an inquiry-led, transdisciplinary framework. The PYP challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.

At the core of the PYP sit the IB Learner Profiles. The learner profiles represent 10 human capacities and responsibilities which encompass holistic growth. Through these capacities the learner is supported in developing international-mindedness and taking action to make a positive change. Throughout the curriculum students are provided with opportunities to develop, model and reinforce these capacities. All Learner Profiles are mapped throughout each year group and across the academic year with appropriate Learner Profiles having a larger focus during a particular unit of inquiry.

The Learner Profiles are:

Inquirers

We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.

Thinkers

We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

Knowledgeable

We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.

Caring

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

Open-Minded

We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.

Risk-Taker

We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.

Communicators

We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

Balanced

We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.

Transdisciplinary Learning

Transdisciplinary learning transgresses subjects. Although some areas of learning may be explicitly taught in isolation, the majority of learning is not confined to subject boundaries but is enriched by them.

This transdisciplinary approach to learning takes place through the 6 transdisciplinary themes, often referred to as our Units of Inquiry. It is considered that all transdisciplinary themes have global significance for all students in all cultures. The teaching through these is supported by knowledge, concepts and skills from the traditional subject areas but are utilised in ways that transcend the confines of these subjects, thereby contributing to a transdisciplinary model of teaching and learning. Throughout their time at IPS Hilversum, learners will be revisiting these themes throughout their years of schooling, so that the end result is immersion in a broad-ranging, in-depth, articulated curriculum.

The transdisciplinary themes are:

How we express ourselves

Who we are

How the world works

Where we are in place and time

How we organise ourselves

Sharing the planet

Through these themes, our teachers are able to collaborate with each other to develop investigations which are relatable, real world, important issues. This allows students to co-construct their units alongside the teacher.
